Memorial Day Holiday / Trash Service

Town office and Court 42 will be closed on Monday, May 27, 2024, for the Memorial Day holiday. Normal hours resume on Tuesday, May 28, 2024. Trash service will be delayed a day.  Pickup will be Friday, May 31, 2024.

Water Main Break on N. Mary Street

There was a water main break in town overnight and the following email was sent by Veolia: As you know, Veolia Water provides water service in the Town of Newport. This morning, our crews responded to a main break on N Mary St, which resulted in a loss of positive water pressure in our system. Reports from our team indicate when the break occurred it drained our tank in a matter of minutes. Our crews were able to get the break isolated and get water service restored to customers. All Veolia customers have water service at this time.    We do need to have a boil water advisory in place until further notice. Our teams are drawing up a map, but the affected service area is about 305 service connections, or approx. population served of 787 people. 2024 Municipal Election *RESULTS*

The 2024 Municipal Election was held on April 1, 2024, at the Old Town Hall, 15 N. Augustine Street, Newport, DE 19804. The preliminary results were posted last evening at the Old Town Hall after the voting machines were closed down. The Election Board held their meeting on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at 11:00 am, at the Old Town Hall, where they certified the results. The newly-elected Commissioners are: Tim Chatburn Lisa Spencer They will both hold a two-year seat. The vote breakdown was as follows: April Balliet – 5 Tim Chatburn – 18 Frank Romanowski – 14 Ashley Smith – 2 Lisa Spencer – 19 Joseph Stagliano – 6 Under Votes (Ballots cast for one candidate only) – 6 Many thanks to the poll workers and the Election Board for a job well-done.

Comprehensive Plan Update

The Comprehensive Plan Update Committee has worked the last several months in updating the town’s Comprehensive Plan.  The last update took place in 2014, so our 10-year update was due. The Introduction and First reading of Ordinance 2024-002 – AN ORDINANCE TO REVISE, UPDATE, AMEND, AND RE-ADOPT THE COMPREHENSIVE PLAN PENDING CERTIFICATION occurred at the Regular Meeting of the Mayor and Commissioners on Thursday, February 15, 2024. You are encouraged to read through these proposed changes and bring any questions you may have to the Regular Meeting of the Mayor and Commissioners on Thursday, March 21, 2024, where the Second Reading, Public Hearing and Adoption will occur.
